In a major push to tribal education in Odisha, the state government has decided to improve the prevailing schools by upgrading them with a mission to increase the number of students’ intake in tribal schools.
It is reported that the ashrams schools will now be upgraded to high schools and high schools to higher secondary schools by academic year 2018-19.
The incumbent chief minister Naveen Patniak at the inaugural function of Saragi Phul festival in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday said that education is the only way to address the inequality.
“Education is the only medium to bridge the gap of inequality. The upgradation of schools will benefit around 1,200 to 1,500 tribal students in availing higher secondary education,” said the minister.

- At the function, the minister pointed out that there are, at present, 8, 000 tribal children studying in private-run English-medium schools across the cities and numerous district under the Anwesha scheme
- More than 2, 000 tribal students, coming from across the state, participated in the three-day children festival, Saragi Phul, displaying skills and talents
- The minister also ensured that of the 1, 760 schools, 21 ashrams schools and 65 high schools will be upgraded to high schools and higher secondary schools besides providing with Plus III classes
- Under the Anwesha scheme, 250 hostels will be set up to accommodate children studying in elite schools
- The minister said that where there are 1, 000 tribal students staying in two hostels in Bhubneshwar, three more hostels will be set up in Rourkela, Sambalpur and Berhampur
- Schools will be provided with vocational training programmes to hone the drop outs and make them more employable. “The department is also planning to introduce vocational training programme for school dropouts to increase their employability. Things are in the planning stage now,” said department secretary Surendra Kumar, as reported by TOI.
