No more flat-screen Galaxy S models, Samsung hints

Samsung has dropped hints that, moving forward, the company may completely ditch flat-screen Galaxy S models in favor of variants with curved display. The hints came from none other than the company’s mobile chief Dong-jin Koh.

“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen),” Koh said in a recent media interview.

Last year’s Galaxy S6 and this year’s Galaxy S7 flagship phones were accompanied by ‘edge’ variants, that – in fact – proved to be more popular than their standard counterparts. Likely emboldened by this, Samsung decided to launch the Galaxy Note7 with dual-edge curved screen but sans ‘edge’ in the device’s name.

The Note7 could well be an experiment of sorts before the company actually goes ahead and outs a single Galaxy S8 model (with curved display) next year.
