In what appear as a major push to promote equality in education for all, one non-profit organisation, Cross the Hurdles has recently launched an online education portal for person with disabilities.

The primary objective behind this mission is to eliminate and reduce the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in order to provide feasible access to quality education.

Virtual classroom:

As designed to provide access for the disable person to quality education, students will be availing quality education at their comfort zone through a dedicated online platform that act as a virtual classroom. In order to avail these facilities, students are required to have computer with speedy internet facilities including headset and microphones to interact with teachers for a customised lesson.

In a process, the organization has designed an online platform to provide customized lessons on English, mathematics, science, Hindi, Sanskrit and social studies.

Pointing out the failure to provide significant platform for such students, the president of Cross the Hurdles, Abha Khetarpal, said, “They are mostly constrained by lack of facilities and awareness about the needs of students with disabilities.”

According to Khetarpal, such initiative would be beneficial for students who couldn’t attend schools due to varying physical challenges.

“Those who are not attending any school at present would be imparted basic knowledge about various subjects. Those who have joined some institution could avail of extra coaching right at their home,” added Khetarpal, as reported by TOI.

Implementation:

  • It is believed that several subject experts and dedicated volunteers would devote their service in this mission to educate the students with disabilities
  • The customised lesson would be based on the syllabus provided by the CBSE
  • A special educator would be arranged for students with intellectual disabilities
  • While the educator would provide extra care for shy students, students would be availing video streaming lessons
  • An interactive whiteboards would be provided wherein instructors can write notes, maths formulas, graph, science equation and others.

The organisation pointed out that such initiative would render substantial advantages for children with dyslexia and dyscalculia besides other disabilities like aspersers’ syndrome and attention-deficit or hyperactivity disorder.
