Last month, Ford introduced the Freestyle. Although it has not yet been officially introduced in this country, Ford dealers have already begun receiving vehicles, and reservations for the vehicle are likely to begin shortly. Before the Freestyle goes on sale, let’s take a closer look.
1. Design
Even though I won’t say that the Freestyle is beautiful, it isn’t exactly ugly. It is based on the Figo which is pretty evident from outside with the small-ish side profile but overall, it doesn’t come close to what it should be- a CUV.
The Honda WR-V, which is distinct from the Jazz, the vehicle it is based on, but not too different to ensure lower development costs, is, in my opinion, the most attractive compact utility vehicle currently available on the market. With only new bumpers and some plastic, Ford could have differentiated the Freestyle.
2. Engine
Ford’s new 1.2L 3-cylinder Dragon engine makes its debut with the Freestyle. The larger 1.5-liter gasoline engine that powers the new EcoSport is the inspiration for this engine. The older 1.2L petrol engine found in the Figo and Aspire has a sluggish low-end and doesn’t do much for fuel efficiency. The new engine is expected to produce 95 horsepower and perform much better.
3. Interiors
The interior is similar to that of the Figo and Aspire, but there is no touch screen, which is borrowed from the EcoSport as well. Despite its abundance of features, its poor integration into the dashboard suggests that it was developed as an afterthought. The upright position, while eliminating reflection, does distract the driver to some extent.
4. Features
In addition to the stunning Touchscreen, the Freestyle will receive six airbags from the Figo—most likely only on the top-of-the-line model. However it does miss out on a few important features at this price including DRLs, Parking Sensors, Parking Camera, an Automatic transmission, Auto headlamps and wipers etc.
Verdict
While prices haven’t been revealed yet, I would suggest Ford to price it between INR 6.5–7.5 lakhs.
Overall, the package comes across as a decent one. Although the market is capable of delivering quite a few surprises, its success is debatable due to the presence of more established rivals in this sector. We would have to wait and watch.
