Sports cars shine at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show

Saving us from the litany of SUVs at this year’s L.A. Auto Show are the sports cars of the show. It might take some sleuthing to find them, but when you do, the reward is worth it.

At this year’s show, two particular debuts stood out, for two different reasons. On one hand, we have the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 coupe and droptop. It’s powered by a monstrous, 6.2-litre supercharged V8 firing 755 horsepower and 715 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels. That’s good for a zero-to-100 km/h run of less than three seconds, a top speed of 341 km/h and a quarter-mile sprint time in the high 10-second range. Quite simply, the ZR-1 is a blunt instrument.

But while the Corvette is a blunt instrument, the Porsche 911 Carrera T is a scalpel. Yes, it’s essentially a de-contented version of the base 911 at a slight price premium, but it’s worth it – the Carrera T uses thinner glass, fabric door pulls and an option to delete its infotainment system, all in the name of saving weight. It’s the purist’s 911.
